Loadability and shelves

The capacities that we indicate are the result of tests carried out on a standard bottle of type Bordelaise “tradition 75cl”. It is therefore likely that the final capacity will be less than that announced. For example, if you load the cellar exclusively with 75cl bottles of Burgundy, you will notice that the capacity is about 30% less than the advertised capacity. The addition of shelves also reduces the maximum capacity indicated.

– Arrange the bottles by type, by simple stacking with the bottom of the bottles facing the back for the bottom row (detached from the wall), and the opposite for the front row (depending on the model). Modulate the shelves according to the size of your cellar and the shape of your bottles.

– Head to tail or neck to neck (depending on the model), modulate the storage of bottles according to their shape and length, put at the bottom the great wines that must age for a long time.

– Rails and shelves are available on order from your service representative or on www.vinokado.com.

– The rails ref. RAILV3 are adaptable on COLLECTOR, PREMIUM and CLASSIC 2/62 shelves.

– Yes, but be aware that each additional shelf will take the place of a row of bottles, thus reducing storage capacity.

– The racks are available on order from your service representative.

Aging cellars

What is the average humidity level?

A real wine cellar must be designed to guarantee an average humidity level of between 50 and 75% at all times.

Is too low a humidity level detrimental to my wine?

Rest assured, this phenomenon has a minimal impact on the wine: the cork may dry out. Please contact your service representative if the humidity level remains low.

How long have I had this wine cellar?

Check if the carbon filter is not too old (> 1 year). If you have not changed it for 1 year, we invite you to buy a new charcoal filter from your dealer or on www.vinokado.com to replace the old one.

How many readings have been taken? With what type of device?

One reading per day is not enough (constant fluctuations), please take 1 reading every hour on average for 24 hours.

Check the reliability and accuracy of the hygrometer, preferably use an electronic hygrometer with a remote display. If your cellar is equipped with a hygrometry display, do not hesitate to use it.

What is the position of the thermostat? What is the temperature in the cellar?

The higher the temperature in your cellar, the higher the humidity level.

Make sure that the seal is not damaged and that the cellar is perfectly airtight.

Where is my cellar located?

If the cellar is located in a closed room, air the room frequently. If the cellar is located in an unheated room, at a certain time of the year (mainly in spring or autumn) your cellar will go on stand-by and the green and red lights will be off. This phenomenon is normal, as the ambient temperature is equal to the required temperature of your cellar, the hygrometry will also follow that of the room. The cellar will be activated once there is a difference of +/- 2°C between the two temperatures (ambient and set).

If the humidity level remains too low :

Add a bowl of water inside your cellar and wait for the total evaporation of the liquid so that the hygrometry rises.

What is the average humidity level?

A real wine cellar must be designed to guarantee an average humidity level of between 50 and 75% at all times.

Is too much humidity harmful to my wine?

First of all, don’t worry, this phenomenon has a minimal impact on the wine. The worst that can happen is that the labels will come off. You can find label protection sprays in the shops. Please contact your service representative if the humidity level remains high.

If you have added a bowl of water :

Remove the bowl of water previously placed inside your cellar and wait for the humidity to decrease.

The temperature in the cellar varies constantly, is this normal?

Yes, it varies according to the cycles of the compressor (or the winter system). It is with slight variations in temperature, over short periods, that the average temperature of the liquid can be maintained.

As for the temperature, the digital display is only an indicator of the temperature of the ambient air in the tank and not a thermometer to know the temperature of the wine in the bottle. It is therefore allowed a tolerance of +/-2°C. Because of the inertial mass of the liquid, the temperature of the liquid varies 10 times less than the temperature of the ambient air.

How to be sure that the temperature is not too low?

The most practical solution is to put an immersible thermometer (of the pool type for example) in a glass bottle filled with water to have the exact temperature in the liquid. The reading should be taken after 24 hours of operation. Thus, you can judge the good regulation of your cellar, if the difference is important contact your service. The installation of a recorder is reserved for technicians.

Check the position of the thermostat:

Turn the thermostat to a lower cooling demand (see instructions).

The door is not closed properly:

Check that a bottle is not blocking the door closure.

Check that the cellar is properly secured.

Ice forming inside: Unplug the appliance and let it defrost (see chapter 1.12 ICE INSIDE THE CELLAR). If the phenomenon persists, contact your service representative.

Check the compressor:

Check that it is not running continuously. If it is, unplug the cellar and call your service representative.

Check that a bottle is not blocking the door closure.

Check that the cellar is correctly positioned.

Check the compressor:

Check that it is not running continuously. If so, unplug the cellar and call your service representative.

The regulation of your cellar is mechanical:

Please note that there is a tolerance of +/- 2°C between the desired temperature and the displayed temperature.

Is it normal for the cellar to be completely silent?

Yes, if the cellar is placed in an unheated room, at a certain time of the year (mainly in spring or autumn) your cellar will go on stand-by and the green and red lights will be off. This phenomenon is normal, as the ambient temperature is equal to the required temperature of your cellar, the hygrometry will also follow that of the room. The cellar will be activated once there is a difference of +/- 2°C between the 2 temperatures (ambient and set).

If the ambient temperature of the room where the wine cabinet is placed is around 12°C (+/- 2°C) and in any case below 12°C. Only the compressor makes noise and it only produces cold. It is therefore normal in these ambient conditions not to hear it, as the wine cellar does not require cooling.

If the ambient temperature is permanently below 9°C, the heating circuit takes over (red/orange light on – depending on the model) and the heating is ensured by a resistance. The device is therefore completely silent.

What causes odors, mold and label peeling?

Too much humidity (see chapter 1.2 TOO MUCH HUMIDITY).

A saturated carbon filter: change it once a year. You can find them at your distributor.

A room that is not sufficiently ventilated.

Regular maintenance of the cellar not carried out periodically. To do this, we recommend that you clean the interior and exterior (front, sides and top) with a mixture of warm water and mild detergent before using the unit for the first time and on a regular basis. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely before reconnecting. Do not use solvents or abrasive agents.

Make sure your bottles are not in direct contact with the bottom wall of your cellar.

How long have you had this wine cellar?

Check if the carbon filter is not too old (> 1 year).

Is the drain not blocked?

The drain hole in the bottom chute of your wine cellar should not be blocked so that water can drain normally behind the cellar into a plastic container above the compressor. You do not need to empty the back pan as the heat from the compressor will evaporate the collected water.

Is the unit level?

It is important to tilt your cellar slightly backwards (with your feet under the cellar) to force the water to go into the drain hole and not into the bottom of your cellar which can be unpleasant for your wines. If the water continues to accumulate at the bottom of the tank, call your service representative.

What is the winter system/kit (depending on model) and how does it work?

The winter kit is a frost protection system that allows the cellar to operate in an environment where the temperature is between 0 and 32°C. A sensor located outside the appliance triggers an electric resistance when the ambient temperature of the room is between 4 and 8°C depending on the model. This resistance is of low power to avoid a sudden rise in temperature and to limit the rapid drop in temperature of the wine and thus avoid thermal shocks that are detrimental to the preservation of the wine.

The system is preset at the factory: it is activated when the internal temperature of the cellar reaches 9°C. No intervention is possible by the user, except for the AVINTAGE™ range models equipped with the INTELITHERM electronic control system (see specific instructions).

Please note that if the ambient temperature is between 8 and 10°C, the winter system will not activate.

The cellar does not make any noise anymore :

This is normal, the winter kit works thanks to a resistance which remains silent.

What does the red/orange light mean?

The hot circuit is on, heating is in progress.

What does the red/orange light off mean?

It is normal, the hot circuit is working by thermostatic intermittence.

How can I be sure that the winter system is working properly?

First of all, make sure that the ambient temperature of the cellar is below 8°C and that it is frost-free.

Check the external temperature and the internal temperature. If the internal temperature is higher, the heating is in progress: the resistance is not very powerful to avoid any thermal shock and to bring the internal temperature back to the right level (12° +/-2°).

Avoid opening the door too often, which causes energy loss.

I hear gas flow noises in the tubing, is this normal?

Normal gas expansion noises, or “gurgling” noises, are characteristic of compression refrigeration units and may occur. This is normal.

How often should I change the carbon filter?

We recommend that you change your carbon filter once a year. You can find them at your distributor.

What is the procedure for changing the carbon filter?

Push it from the inside to the outside or vice versa, depending on the factory installation (towards the wider side).

If you have difficulty removing your filter, feel free to tap it a little to loosen it from the insulation.

Which way should I insert it?

Your carbon filter must be inserted according to the factory’s initial recommendations. Please note how your filter is installed before removing and changing it.

There is ice on the bottom of the cellar, is this normal?

Frost may form during the cooling period of the cellar. When the compressor is switched off, the frost will melt and droplets will remain on the wall. This is normal.

Make sure the door is closed.

Make sure the compressor is not running continuously. If it is, unplug the cellar and call your service representative.

An ice bridge has formed between the bottom wall and the bottles.

Leave a space of a few centimeters between the bottles or the shelves and the bottom of the cellar.

In case a block of ice forms and remains present, contact your service representative.

Is it normal for the compressor in my basement not to run continuously?

It is normal for the compressor not to run continuously. The length of the cooling cycle depends on the set temperature and the ambient temperature. It is agreed that a cooling cycle will be longer if the surrounding temperature is much higher than the set temperature, than when there is a smaller difference between the two temperatures. You can have a cooling cycle of 30 minutes or several hours.

Is it normal for the compressor to start regularly?

The duration of the cooling cycle depends on the set temperature and the ambient temperature. Check the following before starting any intervention:

A large number of bottles have been placed in the cellar.

The cellar is opened very frequently.

The door is not closed properly.

The door seal is not tight.

If you have any doubts, please contact your service representative.

Should having the same temperature on all floors be considered as a failure?

No, not at temperatures between 10° and 14°C, i.e. with the compressor off, or when the winter kit is running because its resistance, located in the lower part of the appliance, generates by a natural phenomenon of convection (hot air being lighter than cold air) a slight stirring of the interior cavity which momentarily erases the usual multi-temperature staggering. As soon as the compressor starts to cool down, the temperature staggering will naturally return.

Is it normal for the cellar to be completely silent?

Yes, if the cellar is placed in an unheated room, at a certain time of the year (mainly in spring or autumn) your cellar will go on stand-by and the green and red lights will be off. If the following symbols appear (depending on the model), there is nothing to worry about:

Flashing snowflake symbol = the cellar is in demand for cold and will start soon.

Fixed snowflake symbol = compressor in operation, so the cellar is cold.

Fixed heating symbol = the cellar is producing heat because the temperature inside the cellar is too low (usually visible in winter).

How many charcoal filters are in my wine cellar?

Check the serial number: up to 412 there are two filters (1 top and 1 bottom) after this number there is only one charcoal filter on top.

It (they) is (are) visible on the left upper part (and lower part if there are two) of the back of the device (black and round plastic part). From the inside, it is hidden by the evaporator guard on the right side.

Where should I place the lava rocks?

They should be placed on the bottom step of the compressor, along the gutter, avoiding clogging the drain.

You can also place them in a specially designed box.

Do I have to moisten them constantly?

No, only the first time you use them, during the winter kit operation (depending on the model) and during the driest periods of the year.

How often should I change them and where can I find them?

Generally every 3 or 4 years, when they become brittle and no longer absorb moisture.

They are available from the dealer’s service department, or you can find them at your distributor.

– Check the reliability and accuracy of the hygrometer, preferably use an electronic hygrometer with a remote display.

What is the position of the thermostat? What is the temperature in the cellar?

The higher the temperature in your cellar, the higher the humidity level will be.

Check that the seal is not damaged and that the cellar is perfectly airtight.

Where is my cellar located?

If the cellar is located in a closed room, air the room frequently.

How can I increase the humidity in my cellar?

This is not a model with naturally controlled humidity.

We invite you to have the tray(s) (depending on the model) permanently filled with water inside the cellar or to place a bowl of water inside your cellar yourself. Wait for the total evaporation of the liquid so that the hygrometry rises again.

Can I place my cellar in an unheated room?

No, these models must be placed in a room with a temperature between 16° – 32°C (depending on the model), they are not equipped with the winter system.

How can I be sure that the temperature is not too low or too high?

The most practical solution is to put an immersible thermometer (e.g. swimming pool type) in a glass bottle filled with water to get the exact temperature in the liquid. The reading should be taken after 24 hours of operation. Thus, you can judge the good regulation of your cellar, if the difference is important contact your service. The installation of a recorder is reserved for technicians.

The temperatures do not correspond to the settings of my choice:

Check the setting made previously.

For some double zone models, a minimum difference of 4°C between the two compartments must be respected when choosing the temperatures (see instructions).

As far as the temperature is concerned, the digital display is only an indicator of the temperature of the ambient air in the tank and not a thermometer to know the temperature of the wine in the bottle. It is therefore allowed a tolerance of +/-2°C. Due to the inertial mass of the liquid, the temperature of the liquid varies 10 times less than the temperature of the ambient air. For some models, the choice of the temperature measurement unit can be in Degrees Celsius or in Fahrenheit (see manual), so check the setting on the display.

What causes odors, mold and label peeling?

Too high humidity (see chapter 2.2 TOO HIGH HUMIDITY).

Air exchange limited to the door openings because of the absence of a carbon filter.

A room that is not sufficiently ventilated.

A classic maintenance of the cellar not carried out periodically. To do this, we advise you to clean the interior and exterior (front, sides and top) with a mixture of warm water and mild detergent before the first use and on a regular basis. Rinse with clean water, let dry completely before reconnecting. Do not use solvents or abrasive agents.

Make sure your bottles are not in direct contact with the bottom wall of your cellar.

I hear a very frequent blowing noise, is this normal?

The fans generate a normal hissing noise, which varies in intensity depending on the model and the number of fans.

For built-in models, make sure that packaging residues are not touching the condenser fan (at the back of the unit near the compressor), which can cause a rubbing noise.

The walls of my cellar are hot, is this normal?

Yes, the condenser is located in the foam, an exchange of calories occurs, we extract heat to have cold.

Can I reverse the opening direction of my cellar door?

Yes (depending on the model), please consult the instructions for your cellar.
